basic crochet scarf?

I know all the stitches in crochet, but I cannot seem to get it the width I want it…How many chains do you star with for a basic scarf? I want to make it extra long, but I don’t think that has to do with how many chains I start with does it? I am so confused!!!!!
I am just doing a basic SC scarf…I am just confused as to how many chains to start with to get he width I want? Man I am all confused now. I am, obviously a beginner at this, but have done a basic HDC/SC afgan, why is a scarf so hard for me to figure out?????

I got through making one row of the single stitches and one row of the double crochet but, I do not understand how to start a new double crochet row from the one I just completed.

what is the best yarn to use to knit a scarf?

i’m planning to make my self a scarf using a crochet hook i would like to know whats a good yarn to use and what size hook would be best for this project?

A crochet scarf pattern states that I can alter the length but it has to be in multiples of 4+3 stitches?

I am beginning to crochet and I made a scarf with double crochet and shells. I loved it and would like to make more. I would like to know how I can shorten or lengthen it. The pattern states I can alter the length as long as I use multiples of 4+3 stitches. What does this mean? I made 203 chains for the foundation and for the 1st row I made a double crochet in the 4th chain from the hook leaving me with 201 stitches across. Thank you for all your help in advance! :)

Trying to find Cotton Candy Pink Ruffle Crochet Scarf, I saw this on curlywhirlies.blogspot.com but cannot find the pattern.
