Currently I’m working on this pattern (http://www.crochetspot.com/free-crochet-pattern-crochet-hook-case/) on Crochet Spot. It calls for a basic shell stitch in alternating colors. Now the pattern itself is not a problem, but my stitches won’t lie flat and the whole thing looks bumby. I’ve done three rows so far, but should I scrap what I’ve done and restart it? Or should I just block the peices at the end to smooth them out? (And would that even work?) Or any other suggestion on how to even things out? Thanks in advance.
Also, I’m using a size H hook and Red Heart Super Saver yarn. It’s a pretty cool pattern, I can’t wait until it’s done. ![]()

I just started learning the basics and I have never done a pattern before. I have learned how to make a sc and dc, but that is it. I wanted a challenge, so I chose to make a baby hooded afghan. The main stitches are sc and dc. Since those were the ones that I knew how to do, I chose to do this pattern. It starts with the hood. Instructions read:
Pattern stitch (multiple of 3 sts):
Row 1: 2 dc in 3rd ch from hook, *skip 2 ch, 1 sc and 2 dc in next ch; rep from * across, ending with skip 2 ch, 1 sc in last ch. Ch 2, turn.
Row 2: 2 dc in first sc, *skip 2 dc, 1 sc and 2 dc in next sc; rep from *across, ending with 1 sc in top of t-ch. Ch 2, turn.
Rep Row 2 for pat.
Now, I am also confused with the first line of Row 1. 2 dc in 3rd ch from hook to me means a half double crochet since it starts at the 3rd chain when making one. Do I make a double or a half double?
I have been reading online for a few hours and I found a website : www.crochetnmore.com/123readapattern.htm. I am aware that I may sound like an imbecile, but I learn easily when I am shown not from just reading. I am aware that it contradicts why I am asking on here, but if I can have someone explain to me the basics of how to start the chain, then it will be helpful. Thanks!
Crocheting a hat consists of several rows that are simple to do but a bit tricky. Watch this free video clip with a crochet expert to show you how to start the second row of a hat. I know only a few of the basics, like a chain stich, double crochet, and the granny square, but does anyone know any good sights that can teach you the other kinds of stitches?
